August 2011Bath City Farm builds the Twerton OdeonVolunteers at Bath City Farm have been busy building an odeon inside an old bomb crater in one of their fields. These structures were used by the Greeks and Romans for performances of music and poetry. Staff are letting other local organisations know about the facility. A school could use it to perform a play, or the youth service could do some rapping there. There are plans to launch the odeon during Apple Day which will take place at the farm in October, although the date for this event is still to be confirmed.
Other farm stuffVolunteers are growing organic produce on the farm which can be purchased in the morning. A cafe kiosk called The Trough is also open in the morning, selling things like soup and ice cream. You can see photos of the produce and the kiosk here and here. Two new workers, Luke and Amy, are taking on the running of the Community Play Rangers sessions at Bath City Farm. These are held on Wednesdays from 3.30pm to 6pm and are for children aged 5 to 13. The City of Bath College is offering free adult learning courses at the farm. A flower arranging course starts on Tuesday 20th September, and a cooking on a budget course starts on Friday 23rd September. Both courses last for 6 weeks and run from 1pm to 3pm. On Thursday morning, St Michael's Church in Twerton hosted a worship event organised by local resident Peter Little. A series of hymns with a historical background were played on the organ and the trumpet, with a reading on the origins and spiritual significance of each hymn given by Rector Richard Wilson. The event was called Open Song and it attracted about 40 people - quite a good number for a weekday service. At one point Richard Wilson spoke of the importance of believers giving good witness to the person of Jesus Christ in the way that they live their lives. Joe, 27/08/11 Got a point of view? Workers from the youth service, Bath Area Play Project and Groundwork led the sports and games, while Somer Residents' Partnership provided bouncy castles and face painting.
A couple of Police Community Support Officers came and did some property marking. The photo opposite is of PCSO Paul Spreadbury marking a bike with the owners' house number and postcode in case of theft. The main thrust of the event was to get residents' views on how Rosewarn Field should be redesigned. A total of £35,000 is available to invest in improving the park, although more money would become available if residents formed a committee and applied for funding. Parents and children wrote down their ideas on the forms provided by Somer, with suggestions in favour of there being sandpits in the play area. Joe, 12/08/11 Got a point of view? Many of the members live in this area, so it is great for picking up a bargain or giving something away. A lot of children's toys and clothes get advertised. If you are on Facebook you can join the group by following the link here. RoundhillA poster about Roundhill in Southdown has been produced. It documents some of the history of Roundhill and also draws attention to historical sites that can be seen from the top of the hill. You can access it on the Articles page, or simply by following the link here. Culverhay savedThis is old news really, but I thought it worth mentioning that the newly elected Liberal Democrat Council has decided to keep Culverhay School open and allow it to apply to become a co-educational school. Local singer loses beard for charityLast Saturday evening at the White Horse Pub, the local singer and guitarist Gem Moase allowed his distinctive fourteen year old beard to be shaved off for charity. About £134 was raised as the collection pint glass was handed around the pub garden and bar.
The money will go to The House of Affection Orphange which is in Kerrala in South West India. You can also support the orphanage by purchasing hand-made goods from Kerala Crafts. Earlier in the day, Gem had been playing music for the fun event at Bath City Farm. Joe, 08/08/11 |
