February 2010Twerton PACT, 11th February
The latest Twerton PACT meeting was held on 11th February in St Michael's Junior School, but it's taken me a while to do the write-up because I've been away in Sheffield. For a detailed summary of the reports and points raised in the meeting click here. The three new priorities to emerge from the meeting were: 1) Parking - additional bays on grass verges; 2) Dog fouling; 3) Further play equipment in Pennyquick Park. The next PACT meeting for Twerton is scheduled for 12th May at 7pm and it will be held in St Michael's Junior School at Newton Road. Joe, 27/02/10 Got a point of view? Put it on the Forum here. 'Save our Stains' charity nightThe White Horse Pub at Shophouse Road will be holding a 'Save our Stains' charity night on Tuesday 2nd March. This is in aid of St Michael's Church in Twerton which sadly had its stained glass windows vandalised a few weeks back. There will be live music from the likes of Gem, Screech and Shaggy, and Scott Cox plus others. In addition, Cottage Brewing and Milk Street Brewery are supporting the cause by giving the Twerton pub a barrel of Puffin Billy beer and a barrel of Gulp. All proceeds from these two beers will be going straight to the cause. So get there early and grab a table, listen to some quality music, drink some great beer and know that you are doing it for the greater good. At Christmas, the Rector of St Michael's Church and some of the congregation performed a night of carol singing at the pub which proved popular - you can see the video clip here. A Twerton lady named Afrel takes an interest in projects which help communities to support themselves in ways that are environmentally friendly. Afrel has sent in the details of a free information day on how to grow your own vegetables, to be held at the Guildhall on 13th February from 2pm to 5pm. See the poster here. This could be helpful for anyone who is on the waiting list for an allotment, thinking of applying for an allotment, who would like to gain experience in a shared vegetable garden, or is planning to grow vegetables at home. Incidentally, on Wednesdays a small produce market is held at the Time Bank in Twerton High Street, which allows people in the area to swap or buy produce from local gardens or allotments. A celebration of the new play area at Hillcrest Field, Southdown, has been organised by The Children's Society and the Council. Scheduled for Saturday 13th February between 10.30am to 12.30pm, the range of fun activities will include face painting and a competition to give the play area a name. Local residents can also see the new facilities which provide children and young people with a safe place to play. These include a pod swing, slide and rope climbing equipment. In addition the field has been landscaped to provide a better area for playing sport. Residents will be able to discuss designs for a new covered seating area, and people involved in the development of the area will be present to listen to the views of the community including children and young people. Community walk was very successfulOn Saturday the Friends of Roundhill group led a walk from Roundhill to the 14th century Tithe Barn at Englishcombe. There was a good mix of children and adults, and people seemed to enjoy the scenery around Englishcombe as we made our way down to the Washpool stream and along the country lanes to the barn.
Jenny Walker the owner of the barn, kindly gave a talk about its history and the restoration work that has been carried out by English Heritage. The two big thermos flasks we took with us were sufficient to supply everyone with coffee on a cold but sunny day. The Community Walk is part of the activities that the Friends of Roundhill group organises throughout the year. Have a look at some photos of the walk on the Friends of Roundhill website here and John Rawling's photos of the barn prior to its restoration here. Joe, 02/02/10 |
