Twerton church organises fun dayOn Saturday 25th July St Michael's Church organised a fun day for everyone, as a way of saying thank you for the support that they received from the community when some church windows were vandalised. The nice thing about this event was that everything was free.
There was a free barbecue that served hundreds of burgers and hot dogs, a coconut shy that eventually ran out of coconuts, a face painting team and some nice children's activities. You could add a bit of art to a community painting which was made up of different people's contributions. See the final painting that was produced here. I think what helped to make this event so successful was having lots of places where people could sit down and talk, thereby fostering a sense of community. A fun day isn't only about activities; it is also a chance for people to meet with friends and neighbours. Joe, 30/07/10 Got a point of view? Put it on the Forum here. Bungee jumping in TwertonLast Saturday, The White Horse Pub at Shophouse Road, Twerton, was packed with people watching or waiting to take part in the bungee jumping. Every year the pub organises an exciting activity to raise money for charity. Last year it was firewalking. People were sponsored to do the jumps, with money raised going to the Southside Family Project, the RUH and a project in India. More than £1000 pounds will have been raised. There were some double jumps (with two people strapped together) and the guy jumping in the above video swings a bit too close to the crane for comfort! Joe, 29/07/10 Got a point of view? For a detailed report on the meeting click here. New priorities raised at the meeting were: 1) The future of Pennyquick Park - with regard to the Council's idea to build allotments there; 2) Continued police foot patrols; 3) Removal of graffiti. Future Twerton PACT meetings will be held in different venues around the Twerton ward, to encourage more people to participate. Joe, 27/07/10 Got a point of view? Put it on the Forum here. Twerton resident builds model helicoptersA Twerton man named Joe who lives at Highland Road, has been building model helicopters as a hobby for about 2 and a half years. Joe made the helicopter below by buying the parts separately and then putting them together. Joe says that model helicopters are harder to fly than model planes. It even takes a while to learn how to hover the helicopter. But planes need a runway so they are not suited to the bumpy ground at Innox Park. Joe is planning to build a bigger helicopter next year.
