The Brickfields gets tidied up

A team of volunteer litter pickers swarmed over the Brickfields playing area on Sunday, clearing away litter and fly tip from the field and bushes. The clean up was organised by community activist June Player, who also keeps the terraces of Oldfield Park Station looking attractive with lots of flowers planted throughout the year.

After a couple of hours of grafting, the team retired to The White Horse Pub at Shophouse Road. Landlady Jacqui Clerk had kindly agreed to let them have a picnic in the garden of the pub. There was some live music too. A video of the litter pick was taken for the Council.

We don't want allotments here!

A protest campaign has been organised against the Council's idea to build allotments on a section of the Pennyquick Park playing field. According to the local newspaper, a petition of more than 300 names has been collected by resident Gillian Crawford (Bath Chronicle, 24th June 2010, p. 5).

It's good to see Twerton people taking a stand against this plan which is a bit of a 'no-brainer'. The park was recently updated with new play equipment as part of the Play Out, Hang Out project to improve 28 play areas in the county. You can email your own point of view to Parks Manager Simon Memory at: simon_memory@bathnes.gov.uk

Don't be a victim of domestic violence

It is a known fact that when the World Cup is on, there is an increase in the number of incidents of domestic violence. Victims of domestic violence can feel lonely and scared but there is help available to turn your life around.

The Council has made a short video telling the story of a former victim and how she received help from the Southside Family Project. You can watch the video on the Council website by clicking here. For more information on getting help, click here. The Southside Family Project has an office at Meade House, Wedgewood Road. Their phone number is 01225 331243.

Memories of Whiteway

Some memories and old photos of Whiteway have been added to the Articles section here. These provide a valuable insight into what life was like on the Whiteway Estate in the 1950s and 1960s. I think this is the first effort that has ever made to record some of the history of Whiteway.

I'm pleased we've got these because most of the written history and old photos of South West Bath date back to Victorian and Edwardian times. There should be more record of Twerton, Whiteway and Southdown as they were in the postwar era.

If you have your own memories or old photos of Twerton, Whiteway or Southdown, please get in touch and we'll put them on the website. One reader has commented on the article here.

Support for England at The Full Moon

There was a lot of support for England at The Full Moon Pub on Saturday evening, when the World Cup game against the USA was shown on the screen. The pub was well decorated with England flags and emblems, and some people were wearing the England football shirt.

There was plenty of comraderie, lots of humour and a very loud cheer when Emile Heskey's goal gave England an early lead. Some of the pub regulars are from the RNID Poolemead Centre and a couple of them came and enjoyed watching the game.

Later on there was disappointment over England goalie Rob Green's blunder which allowed the USA to level the match. Some of the viewers play in The Full Moon's own team and felt that the England side should be playing better football.

Here are some World Cup predictions from The Full Moon.

Donna: "England can get to the last sixteen."

Matty: "England to win. They can beat anyone. I'm English, what do you expect me to say?"

Gary: "England can get to the semis. They can beat Brazil on the day. They are doing okay except for one silly mistake."
