Bits and pieces, 14th May

Mast refused

Vodafone's application to install a 15 metre mast at Poolemead Road was refused at a meeting held in the Guildhall yesterday. Thanks to everyone who sent in objection letters to the Planning Department. Community action and using your voice really can make a difference sometimes.

Police advisors

The police are looking for members of the public to provide feedback on the service that they're providing. Volunteers would be part of an advisory group set up to make sure services match your community's needs as closely as possible. The deadline for applications is 11th June. For more information telephone Gemma Kirby on 0845 4567000.

PACT meeting

A Twerton PACT meeting was held on 12th May in St Michael's Junior School. The priorities to be looked into from this meeting are: 1) Motorbikes at Redland Park; 2) Parking at Cleeve Green and Newton Road; 3) The disused play area and wooden fencing at Redland Park. For detailed minutes of the meeting click here.

Bath City FC are going up

Fantastic news. Bath City FC have gained promotion to the Blue Square Premier league after beating Woking 1-0 in the final at Twerton Park. Regular fans were thrilled to see thousands of additional people turn up to watch the game. The crowd attendance figure has not yet been announced but terraces were jam packed with Bath City supporters.

We knew that Woking had recently found top form just when they needed it, but City played confidently from the offset. There was an early scare when a Woking blast at goal rebounded off our goalpost with great force. In the 9th minute of the second half, Kaid Mohammed scored from a penalty to very loud applause.

Running out of time to rescue their chance of promotion, Woking looked increasingly dangerous in attack while City players stoutly defended their goal. The referee's final whistle prompted a celebratory pitch invasion from ecstatic Bath City fans.

Cake and Break at Rose Cottage

A Cake and Break event was held at the Rose Cottage Community Centre and Cafe in Twerton High Street on Friday. The sale of cakes and books was to raise money for the Muscular Sclerosis Society. Thousands of these Cake Breaks have been organised across the country in support of the same good cause.

There was quite a crowd inside when I turned up. The cafe opened a few years ago but it was a while before people discovered it. Nowadays you are likely to meet someone you know when you go in.

In the cafe, news on the election results was being broadcast over the radio, so people were discussing what they thought was going to happen next.

Cakes and books had been donated by members of the Twerton Church which runs the cafe, volunteers who help out and other people in the local community.

No one could give an estimate of the number of customers that had come in that day. But people thought it must have been a lot, judging by all the cakes that had been sold.

Bits and pieces, 1st May

City in the final!

Bath City FC have beaten Chelmsford in the second leg of the semi-final, taking them through to the final for promotion to the Blue Square Premier League. Woking will be our opponents in the final which will be played at Twerton Park on Sunday at 2pm.

City had to play Chelmsford twice - at home last Tuesday (2-0) and away on Saturday (1-0). On both occasions Chelmsford dominated the game. But by maintaining a steely defence and by capitalising on the occasional chance, City knocked the wind out of Chelmsford's sails.

Phone mast

The application by Vodafone to install a phone mast at Poolemead Road will be considered at a meeting in the Guildhall on 12th May at 2pm. You can request to speak at this meeting by notifying Democratic Services on 01225 394414. News on the protest campaign is here.

Healthy Living Week

This is an annual programme of healthy activities organised by local community agencies, which this year begins in the last week of May. There will be cooking tips and sessions, organised walks, bike maintenance, a celebration at Bath City Farm and much more. To see the timetable of activities click here.

Projects

Our Southdown Councillors report that all the projects they have submitted for small grant funding have been approved. The main one is the provision of a CCTV system for the Mount Road shops. Other schemes include support for football goalposts, grit bins, a noticeboard for Roundhill, Pop-up Messy Play for kids with difficulties and a rap music project. For more information see here.
