YFC promote the Rec House in Twerton

Last Saturday a team of thirty people from Nottingham Youth For Christ came to Twerton and Whiteway. They spent the day doing good turns for local residents, for example by washing their cars and picking up litter.

The team were also handing out flyers advertising the launch of The Rec House in Twerton. In the evening they ran a Youth Cafe in the Rec House to show young people its recording studio, DJ decks, dance studio, drama space and area for band rehearsals. The Rec House is next door to the Full Moon Pub in Twerton High Street and is managed by St Michael's Church.

Three members of the team, Beth, Helen and Luke (pictured above) visited the Christmas Fair at Blagdon Park Community Centre in Whiteway to let people know about the Youth Cafe to be held that evening. Find out about the Rec House here.

Old photographs of Twerton

We have been sent a collection of 45 old photos of Twerton from a historical society in Surrey. The owner of the set, Mr Martin Parkes, couldn't work out how they had come to his family but he kindly passed them on to this website. I will scan the photos and put them online.

The above pictures of the Twerton ferry operating in the 1900s are part of the collection. The site of the ferry isn't far from the ha'penny bridge that spans the river, down by the Golden Fleece Pub. Showing to the right is the Weston Cut canal with the track that goes past The Dolphin.

If you walk over the ha'penny bridge and turn left, shortly before you get to the canal there is a low red brick platform built into the bank. I think that is where the ferry used to land.

Climbing raises funds at Whiteway

Local residents summoned the courage to scale a 30 foot vertical climbing wall on Saturday. The wall which is hired out by the firm Vertical Extreme, was taken to Rosewarn Field, Whiteway, so that funds could be raised for a cleaning project on the estate. Some people had been sponsored to make it to the top of the wall, while others paid the £2.50 to do the climb.

When it was my turn to have a go, I found that the wall does give you a bit of an andrenaline rush. Even though you are attached to a safety cable the whole time, the sensation of being a long way off the ground and holding on by just a few handgrips and footholds, makes the heart beat faster. Qualified instructors were on hand to call out instructions from below.

Most of the children could clamber up the wall quite quickly which made the adults look slow. When you got to the top there was a button to press, which made a whooping noise to show that you had done it. Well done the Whiteway Changes group for organising the event.

New homes being built in Twerton

This long distance shot of Twerton by Mr John Rawlings shows the construction of flats for rent on the former site of the Marjorie Whimster elderly person's home. There will also be some three bedroom houses. The original date for competion is March 2011 and looks likely from the photo.

To see the above photo large size click here.

The site has a long history as an archaeological survey revealed fragments of medieval pottery in the ground where the homes are being built. On the same spot there was once a street called Penny Buildings where a Wesleyan chapel was constructed in 1816.
