Bits and pieces, 18th October

Play forum

Parents and local residents all have a stake in the future of children's play in Whiteway. Come to a meeting in the Southside Youth and Community Centre, to help set up a play forum to make sure that children can still play in Whiteway!

With coffee and cakes and time to discuss ideas, such as street play, playdays and playschemes. On Tuesday 25th October from 10am to 12 noon.

Bath City Farm

25th October - Apple and Pumpkin Day will be held at Bath City Farm from 11am to 3pm. There will be fun activities including juicing, apple bobbing and pumpkin carving.

30th October - Bath City Farm will be digging a pond and children are invited to help out from 11am to 3pm. Children under 8 must be supervised by an adult.

5th November - Enjoy a massive fire and delicious barbecue from 7pm to 9pm. The farm doesn't use fireworks in case they frighten the animals, but you can watch the fireworks going off over the Rec.

Loan sharks

A campaign to clamp down on illegal money lenders and offer support to victims of loan sharks is starting. The Council is inviting people to find out more at the launch on Wednesday 26th October, from 1pm to 3.30pm, at Bath City Football Club, Twerton Park. More information here.

Twerton Infant School makes mosaics

Twerton Infant School has produced some attractive mosaics that brighten up the school entrance. Headmaster Paul Mattausch Burrows said that the mosaics were made to show that the children have creative skills. Another reason was that by changing the appearance of the school, local people could see that Twerton Infant School changes over time.

For larger size photos of the mosaics, click here and here.

The children made the faces and other designs out of clay. Then a specialist artist was brought in to help complete the mosaics by doing the tricky bits. After half term, the children at the infant school will be learning some simple hands-on foresting skills.

Southside news

The new cafe located in the Southside Youth and Community Centre has been busier this week, serving lots of breakfasts. Cafe staff Debbie and Liz (pictured right) say that some more mums from the surrounding estates have been discovering the cafe as a place to have a meal together. Small children are able to use the soft play area which adjoins the cafe. The Southside Centre opens onto Kelston Road in Whiteway and Poolemead Road in Twerton.

Other developments are also happening. The centre's gym should be open for young people very soon, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 5pm to 7pm. And an employment club leading to a qualification is due to start for all ages, in the week after half term. There have been some discussions over how to make the centre enjoyable for elderly residents. Some elderly people in Poolemead Road have been asking about having bingo, so this is one idea to be looked at.
